Darwin - International AIDS Candlelight Memorial
Every year we hold an event to acknowledge this day and to provide a safe space for people living with HIV, their friends, family and supporters to remember those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS and reflect on the work still to be done in combating the AIDS pandemic.
The Darwin 2018 International AIDS Candlelight Memorial is being held on Sunday May 20 this year at Lake Alexander from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.
All are welcome to attend, with refreshments by Tatse Lab provided, DIY Candle making by donation and you can also set off a memorial lantern!
Entertainment will include live music, a short film screening and guest speakers, all under Darwin's gorgeous tropical night sky.
Please bring a chair or rug, you are able to BYO eskie but no glass is permitted. Please take home your rubbish and leave the area as you found it. We will have oil lanterns, coils and repellent spray on hand to ward off the mosquitos.
The theme this year is "reflecting on our past, preparing for our future".
The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial reminds us of the tremendous impact that HIV/AIDS movement has had on our lives. The Memorial emphasises the need for people living with, and affected by, HIV to join hands, reflect on the past, and honour the precious lives that have been lost. The Memorial also calls on us to share our stories of challenge, perseverance, and triumph to educate the current and next generations about what the AIDS movement has achieved over the last three decades. Finally, the Memorial asks us to work together, now more than ever, to sustain, strengthen and revitalise the global response to HIV by looking forward and preparing for our future free of HIV-related stigma and discrimination and with universal access to the full range of human rights, including quality prevention, treatment and care services for all.
We hope you can join us for this special candle lit evening under the stars.
