Advocacy 2 - Nothing About Us Without Us

Q & A with NTAHC- SWOP NT & Care & Support staff

Overview:

"The meaningful involvement of affected communities in sexual health responses improves the relevance, acceptability and effectiveness of sexual health programs, and recognises their right to self-determination and participation in decision-making processes that affect their lives."

“Nothing about us, without us” is about improving the relevance, acceptability and effectiveness of sexual health programs by enabling peers as representatives of their communities to access state, national and regional key decision making areas. Examples of peer led initiatives in spaces such as the Greater Involvement of People Living With HIV (GIPA), AIDS Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO) member forums/AGMs, UNAIDS programming – PCB, UNFPA, International AIDS Conferences ICAAP & World AIDS Conference Community Forums recommendations.

Mapping of the inter-connectivity of NTAHC’s peer connections via their programs of their peak representative organisation that make up AFAO members. Case studies as examples of areas in programming – of how peers who engage in NTAHC programs feed back into state, national & international policy and documentation via their peak state national and international peer networks. CDC and NTAHC presenters speak of the importance of peers throughout their work in the Northern Territory and previous examples of direct work within the Asia Pacific

“Nothing about us, without us” improves participants knowledge in understanding the relevance of peers, the acceptance of peer directed contemporary initiates and evidence in being vital at “key decision making tables” for effective sexual & reproductive health programming within state, national and International context that enables an effective response to planning sexual and reproductive health
