What is Hepatitis

Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by viruses like Hepatitis A, B, or C. Some types go away on their own, others stay in the body long-term and can cause serious health issues. At NTAHC, we offer free testing, support, and care for people affected by hepatitis in the Northern Territory.

  • Hepatitis A

Overview: Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus. It is typically spread through ingestion of contaminated food and water.

Symptoms: Fever, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and jaundice.

Prevention: Vaccination and practicing good hygiene.

  • Hepatitis B

Overview: Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the Hepatitis B virus. It can be acute or chronic.

Symptoms: Some individuals may experience no symptoms, while others may have fatigue, jaundice, and liver damage.

Transmission: Spread through contact with infectious body fluids, such as blood.

Prevention: Vaccination and practicing safe sex.

  • Hepatitis C

Overview: Hepatitis C is primarily spread through blood-to-blood contact. It can result in chronic liver disease.

Symptoms: Often asymptomatic early on, but chronic infection can lead to severe liver issues.

Prevention: No vaccine is available; however, avoiding sharing needles and other drug paraphernalia can reduce risk.

  • Who is at risk

Individuals with a higher risk of contracting hepatitis include those who inject drugs, have multiple sexual partners, are healthcare workers, or are exposed to contaminated blood or body fluids. Hepatitis A is also a risk for those in areas with poor sanitation and for travelers to high-risk areas. Additionally, infants born to mothers with hepatitis B, household contacts of infected individuals, and those with chronic liver disease are also at increased risk

  • Hepatitis C is spread through blood-to-blood transmission.
  • Therefore, practice safe injecting behaviours where possible, use of sterile injecting equipment and don’t share a bloody thing, keep a personal kit to protect you and your community and avoid hepatitis C.
  • It is now common to be able to get a finger prick test for hepatitis C test with your drug user representative organisation. Meaning you can avoid veinous puncture.
  • Not everyone shows symptoms, so you could have hepatitis C and not know it. That’s why it’s important to make sure you test regularly if you have shared any injecting equipment.
  • Love your liver and get a check-up. Hepatitis C effects the liver and can cause damage, even after treatment if the liver disease is sufficiently advanced. Put your mind to rest and get a fibroscan, ultrasound or your LFTs measured.
  • Treatment for Hepatitis C is easy. And with early detection you can prevent liver damage.
  • It’s your right to treat hepatitis C every time. You have a right to quality health care. And as reinfection is possible with hepatitis C you have a right to have it treated as often as you need.
  • Take care of you and your mob. With hepatitis C caring is not sharing injecting equipment. Grab fresh equipment for you and your mob when you go to the NSP. And look after your health and your mobs.
  • Live free of hepatitis C. It is no longer the long-term chronic health condition it was under the old medications. Treatment is simple and fast. And you can clear the virus and live hepatitis C free.
  • Pills treat hepatitis C in 8-12 weeks. Fast effective treatment without any injections. Since 2016 medications have improved and are now easily tolerated. It’s getting easier all the time.
  • Feel deadly. Feel amazing and get rid of the brain fog and fatigue treat hepatitis C.
  • Get clear while on the gear. Drug use does not stop you from being treated for hepatitis C. You are eligible for treatment even if you are using drugs.
